The 12th Mining Emergency Response Competition (MERC) was held on 26-27 November 2022 in Perth WA. The prestigious MERC event provides world class emergency rescue training and skill building opportunities for volunteer mines rescue teams. The metropolitan location provides Perth-based industry representatives, FIFO workers, mining families and the local community to view firsthand, the skills of the mining emergency response teams who help to ensure safe workplaces and communities in the event of emergency.

Baseline Onsite was proud to sponsor the Best Medic Award, and we congratulate Tommy Curtis of FMG Chichester on winning the MERC 2022 Best Medic Award.

Participating in the Hazmat event, Baseline Onsite’s Isobel (Izzy) Franken volunteered as a casualty, who in the scenario was suffering from simulated severe chemical burns to her face and hands following a simulated burst pipe containing “Royal Water” (Hydrochloric Acid and Nitric Acid). Izzy is a Registered Nurse and Regional Coordinator who supports our nurse team across Rio Tinto’s Pilbara operations.

Baseline Onsite thanks Izzy and all the MERC volunteers for giving time to help improve health and safety outcomes in mining.
