This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to select, don, operate and maintain breathing apparatus equipment in a hazardous atmosphere. It includes conducting pre-donning checks and tests of breathing apparatus; donning and checking of breathing apparatus; operating breathing apparatus and concluding breathing apparatus operations.

The unit applies to personnel who work as a member of a team. Work at this level is undertaken under direct supervision and instruction.

The unit is applicable to personnel from the emergency services, volunteer organisations and associated industries.

Duration: 2 days

This unit applies to personnel who respond to an incident involving dangerous goods and hazardous substances and who have the skills and knowledge to identify and assess the hazards and risks as well as contribute to the development, implementation and review of the plan constructed to mitigate the risk posed to the public and environment.

‘Hazardous materials incident’ is a generic term used to refer to an incident involving any material such as dangerous goods and hazardous substances that poses an unreasonable risk to life, property and the environment.

Duration: 3 days

This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to undertake vertical rescues in a range of emergency situations in natural and manmade environments. It includes a range of vertical rescue situations, preparing and responding to rescue situations, assessing rescue scenes, establishing vertical rescue systems and performing in and terminating rescues.

The unit is applicable to personnel from the emergency services, volunteer organisations and associated industries.

Pre-requisite Unit:

• PUASAR022 Participate in a rescue operation

Duration: 4 days

This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to undertake rescues in confined spaces. A confined space is determined by the hazards associated with a set of specific circumstances and not just because work is performed in a small space.

The unit is applicable to a range of confined space rescue situations undertaken by personnel from the emergency services, volunteer organisations and/or organisations where confined space work is performed.

This unit covers the competency for responding to an urban fire where offensive and defensive strategies are used, when working as a member of a team under direct supervision.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to plan and prepare for underground fire-fighting activities and monitor, control and extinguish underground fires in the resources and infrastructure industries.

It applies to those who work in operational roles, work in teams and have some responsibility for the outcomes of others.

Duration: 2 days

This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to gain access to and extricate casualties from vehicles that have crashed on the road, whilst minimising the potential for further injury and preserving the integrity of evidence.

The unit is applicable to members of rescue teams and requires responders to access casualties using a range of technique and to operate specialist equipment to undertake the rescue.

• HLTAID003 Provide first aid

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to navigate, communicate and apply safe work processes and procedures using a self-contained regenerative oxygen breathing apparatus in an irrespirable atmosphere.
The unit applies to personnel who work as a member of a team. Work at this level is undertaken under direct supervision and instruction.

Duration: 5 days

This unit addresses the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty. Designed to apply to all workers who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

Duration: 2 days

This unit provides the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid response and emergency life support to a casualty in a remote and/or isolated situation.

It applies to workers who may be required to prepare for and provide a first aid response in locations beyond the reach of timely medical assistance.

Duration: 3 days

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines and applies to all workers who may be required to provide CPR, in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

Duration:  4 hours

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to use specialised equipment in the provision of resuscitation in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines and applies to workers who may be required to use specialised equipment to provide resuscitation in a range of complex situations, include community and workplace settings.

This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to search for and locate lost persons and/or items as a member of a land search team.
The unit is applicable to individuals who are required to perform a land search as a member of a team, under the direction of a team leader, in a range of environments and conditions.

Identifying essential traits and developing key skills of an effective leader through the application of contemporary leadership models within practical exercises, giving participants the opportunity to apply classroom learning to realistic situations.

Aimed to suit personnel who are entrusted to provide leadership within their company, primarily for Mines Rescue personnel during training preparedness and actual incidents that may occur on site.

Duration: 4 days

This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to work as a member of a crew to apply appropriate fire control strategies and safe work practices to extinguish a wildfire, participate in mop ups and patrol operations and prepare equipment for the next crew.

The unit applies to personnel who work as a member of a crew or team and work at this level is often undertaken without direct supervision and instruction.

Duration: 3 days

This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to drive vehicles safely, including the systematic and safe control of all vehicles’ functions and the management of hazardous situations under operational conditions.

The unit is applicable to public safety personnel who are required to operate vehicles both on and off road during public safety operations.

Duration: 2 days

This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to operate a portable pump and/or appliance mounted pump at an incident.

The unit is applicable to personnel who are responsible for operating centrifugal appliance mounted pumps, portable pumps and foam systems at an incident. Typically, this work requires the application of basic principles hydraulics and involves working as a member of a team under limited supervision.

This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to work as a member of a non-specialist team, under supervision, when responding to an aviation incident. It applies to personnel required to respond to an aircraft incident, primarily outside of major domestic and international airports.

This unit of competency covers the skills and knowledge required to test the working atmosphere, using electronic test apparatus, to find out if it is safe for the proposed work.

It applies to situations where an individual may be required to carry out gas testing of an atmosphere prior to entering a specific area or workspace.

This unit of competency covers the skills and knowledge required to undertake an appropriate first response to fire incidents in onshore and offshore situations/emergencies.

People working, operating or who regularly travel to an onshore or offshore hydrocarbon/petrochemical installation or facility or major hazard facility may require this competency.

Duration: 4 hours

This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to confine small emergencies in a facility and it applies to occupants who are required to have first attack firefighting skills.

Small emergencies in a facility include incidents such as small fires that can be controlled using a fire extinguisher; chemical spills that can be controlled using facility personal protective clothing and equipment and a spill kit; or a vehicle accident where there is no significant injury or damage.

Duration: 1 day

This unit covers the performance of pole top rescue procedures as an emergency procedure required in the workplace.

It encompasses responsibilities for rescue, health, safety and risk management processes at all operative levels and adherence to safety practices as part of the normal way of doing work.

This unit covers the performance of rescue procedures from live low voltage (LV) apparatus, not including overhead lines and underground cables in the workplace.

This unit provides the skills and knowledge required to confirm collection requirements, prepare client and equipment and collect specimens via urine and/or oral and breath testing following the special procedures that apply for drugs of abuse testing.

It applies to individuals working in collection centres, in hospitals, in other health care environments and workplaces where drugs of abuse testing takes place.
